Height: up to 20-40m high

Winter buds: orange brown colour, up to 20 waxy scales, a cluster of terminal buds.

Leaves: simple, alternate, 4-7 pairs of uneven lobes, 2 lobes where leaf at­taches to 1-5 mm stalk.

Flowers: slender male catkins and pinkish brown female flowers on the end of new shoots.

Fruit: acorn on 2-8 cm stalk.

Distribution: widespread, dominant in woodlands.
