Size: wingspan 63-68mm (male), 67-75mm (female).
Description: Deep red wings with very distinctive ‘peacock eyes’. The underside of the wings are marbled brown and very dark.
Habitat: Flowery banks and gardens. Larvae feed on nettles, adults commonly seen on buddleia.
Distribution: throughout the UK, although not in parts of northern Scotland.
